The concept EP American Circus is named for the record’s third track, which won an Honorable Mention in the Mid Atlantic Song Contest as an allegory for America’s crumbling democracy. The songs on this EP tell an emotional story of political breakdown, reflected in a range of styles from melodic ballads to lean folk arrangements to loud and angry rock - a departure from the steadier folk-country vibe of our first album.
Unlike the decades of songwriting captured on Union Station, these songs came fast and furious in just a few months. Although political, the songs are intensely personal. As long-time residents of Washington, DC we have been directly affected by our nation’s dramatic upheaval. We recorded half the songs at home, then brought in their “back up band,” The Damages, to record the other half in our hometown studio, Asparagus Media, where the entire EP was mixed and mastered.

Our debut album, Union Station, represents the acoustic, folk, and country aspects of Collide's repertoire. Some of these songs emerged from Catherine's earliest writings, like the title track, Union Station, a nostalgic ballad that is well known to our fans. This record also includes newer and rarely heard offerings like the quietly heartbreaking Timeless White. We've thrown in some rousing crowd favorites such as Get, along with the complex, soulful October Sky, which features guitarist and co-writer Jimmy Stewart of Quiet the Mountain. Frequent collaborators Lynn and Unni Cheryan of Dovetail Joints also lend their talent to the record.

We recorded this song in the classic folk style with acoustic steel string guitar, cajon, and a single vocal. It is our social commentary on the culture war that's raging around the terms, "Woke" and "DEI" - and what's really important when it comes to the concepts of fairness, equality, and righting historical wrongs.
Dark and haunting, this spare acoustic ballad offers a commentary on political and social breakdown, with nostalgia for more innocent times. The track features a 12-string guitar and cello.
Catherine wrote this lament in November 2024, inspired by a sign she saw on a local highway. Released on Inauguration Day, which coincided with the holiday honoring Martin Luther King, Jr., the song mourns the loss of national unity, while making a plea for the country to heal.
